Change Stinks

Now that Mason is two years old, he is old enough to attend preschool at our YMCA Children's Center. This is something I have been looking forward to for a long time. My child gets to finally start participating in YMCA activities. This is exciting on many levels. One is that I have a child that can grow up in the Y and enjoy all of the great programs that we offer. Another is, he will be attending a school that is only a few miles from where my office is located which is convenient if I needed to get to him quickly one day! And another is...that he can attend our program for FREE!! Yep, that's right FREE. As of now, I no longer have a monthly preschool payment to pay. One of our employee benefits is our children are allowed to participate in our programs for at no charge to the employee. Huge benefit that I am extremely thankful for! While all of these reasons are great and I have been looking forward to all of them, a few weeks ago I found myself getting really worked up about him have to move to a new place. I had so many thoughts running through my head. Things like, how am I going to do drop off and pick up everyday? What will I do with him on teacher workdays? How will my staff feel about him being there? How will he adjust? Will he like it? Will he cry and be sad? On and on and on. Everyone kept telling me things would work out and that I was stressing over it too much. For those that know me well, know this is how I am. I have a tendancy to over analyze everything. Let me fill you in on how the past two weeks have been for us.

Well, the first two days were transition visits so he could only be there a couple of hours. Those two days were a breeze. He went right in and joined the class like he had been there before. I was excited that this change might now be a big deal at all. His teachers were impressed with him and said he is going to do just fine. Our first full day was on a Monday. He had a doctor's appointment that morning so we didn't get there until 11:00am. We walked in and he immediately asked to be held. I picked him up and told him it was going to be alright. He held on tight while I talked to his new teacher, Mr. Greg, for a few minutes. When it was time to go, I handed him to Mr. Greg and the screaming and tears instantly started. I continued to walk out of the classroom and could hear him all the way down the hallway. I waited a few minutes to see if he would calm down and he did not so I waited a little longer and he started to settle. I proceeded to leave the building when I heard screaming again and this time it was, mommy come back! Mommmmmyyyyyyy! I kept walking and could hear him outside and it BROKE my heart. I left in tears and continued on to work. About 10 minutes after I left, I got a text message from Mr. Greg telling me Mason had calmed down and was OK. I was ok by this time too so we were all good. Day 2 went about like day 1 so needless to say all my fears seemed to be coming true about this whole change!

Day 3 and 4 progressively got worse. Day 3 he started crying as soon as well pulled into the center parking lot. Day 4, he started crying as soon as I put him in his car seat to leave the house. He seemed to be really sad and very clingy and at night started to wake up during the night and very early in the morning screaming, "mommy come back!" It was breaking my heart and I felt so guilty for putting him through all of this. Day 5 was very similar to the others but now we had the weekend to spend some extra time together. Great you say. It was great but he started to TEST every thing possible and was being a little turkey! We use re-direction as much as possible with him but after so many times and that not working, I had to move to time outs. I even had to "pop" him on his bottom (well, diaper) a couple of times throughout the weekend to get him to listen. It was a complete 360 for him. I feared the terrible two's were in full force now.

We made it through the weekend which was exhausting because he was in to everything and woke up before 6:00am both days. Now it is on to week two of a new preschool. The crying and screaming continued during drop off but when I picked him in the afternoons he was playing and didn't immediately run to me. Mr. Greg continued to text me to reassure me he was calming down quickly and was ok. He also sent me a picture showing me he was starting to play with the other children.

Fast forward to day 3 of the second week and he walked right in his classroom and started playing in the sensory table which was full of dried oats and farm animals. I was a bit surprised but went with the flow and tried to leave in a hurry. Mr. Greg called me back for a second and Mason turned around and ran to me and started crying. I told him it would be alright and put him down and left. He screamed for a few minutes and that was it. I saw a few of the other teachers as I was leaving and they all told me he was doing great. I told them that I knew he was but it was still hard leaving him like that. I know it gets better and this is all normal but it has been emotionally draining having to have him crying and screaming when I leave. Below are a few more pictures showing that he does fine after I leave.

Today is Friday and there was a teacher workday today so no school for Mason which meant no work for mommy so we are spending the day together and will hopefully have a great weekend.

After two weeks at his new school, we have noticed that he has been singing new songs in the evenings when he would be playing. He even started saying his ABC's and counting to 10!! He must be getting something out of his day even if he does appear miserable and sad in the mornings. I know he was ready for more structure and being around children that are his age or older. I hope the crying stops and he gets back to his happy, go lucky self when I drop him off in the mornings. I miss my happy little boy and I am not ready for the terrible two's! Here's hoping week three continues to get better.

Until next time......

Earthquake, Really?

We had an earthquake here yesterday. Yes you read that right. We experienced the tremors from an earthquake that hit Richmond, Virginia. It rated 5.8 on the richter scale. I was sitting at my desk, talking on the phone with a co-worker when all of a sudden my chair started vibrating and the pencil holder on my desk started shaking. I said I think we are having an earthquake. My co-worker laughed and we went on with our conversation. Soon after I got off the phone, another one of my co-workers came in and said his wife called and she said their entire how shook and things fell off of some shelves. I said see I am not crazy. Of course soon after that it was everywhere on the internet and people were commenting about it on Facebook. Crazy, huh. Earthquakes in NC. Who'd a thunk it?

Magic Kingdom - Take 2

Well it was late when we got back from our second trip to Magic Kingdom so I didn't get a chance to write about our evening. It was an incredible evening. As soon as we got back, we decided to try our luck and see if there was any chance we could get a reservation to have a character dinner at the Crystal Palace. Lady luck was on our side as we were able to get in after only having to wait for 10 minutes. We had dinner with Tigger, Eyeore, Pooh and Piglet. Mason was so excited to see the characters from a distance but was not quite as excited when they got to our table. He wasn't so sure about those BIG animals near him so was very cautious. Pooh visited first. Mason didn't want to get out of his high chair but i took him out so he could hug Pooh. Of course he wasn't having that either. The best we got was he touched Pooh's soft head and that was it. Below is a couple of Pooh pictures.

Eyeore was the next one up and he was Mason's least favorite. We snapped a few pictures and he moved on to the next table.

Our next character was Tigger. Mason absolutely loves Tigger. He has slept with a stuffed Tigger since he was a year old. He was excited watching Tigger make his way to our table. He kept saying with a huge smile on his face, "Tigger coming". We thought sure that he had warmed enough with the first two that he would be ready for Tigger. No such luck. He didn't want anything to do with him. If you will notice in the picture below, he has my cell phone up to his ear. He was pretending to talk to GiGi and wanted nothing to do with Tigger. Just minutes before Tigger arrived at our table, he was telling GiGi all about Tigger coming and was so excited.

After enjoying our character dinner we headed back out into the park. We walked around in the "older" kids sections to see what we had to look forward to in the next couple of years!

After several more hours, we decided to call it night. Before leaving the park, I got some pretty cool photos of Cinderella's castle at night.

2 Years Old

Happy Birthday to my little guy. It is hard to believe my baby is already 2 years old. Time sure has been flying by. It has been the most amazing two years of my entire life. Each day brings something new and special and I continue to love him more and more. He is an awesome little boy that makes me smile every day. I hope he knows and feels how much I love him and how happy he makes his mommy!

I love you Mason. Happy Birthday baby!

Downtown Disney X 2

We enjoyed Downtown Disney so much the first time that we decided to go back again to see what we missed the first time. We were also in search of a t-shirt and a prize from GiGi. We found both at the enormous Disney store that was there. That place was crazy with hundreds of people going nuts buying Disney "stuff". We were among the crazies but did not go "crazy" spending like the woman ahead of me in line. Her total was $549.94 for all of the stuff that her 2 children wanted. Mason got a t-shirt and a set of Cars figurines. I spent a whopping $45 and he was happy as can be!

The picture below is a visual description of the the excitement Mason has shown while doing new, exciting things on vacation. It has been amazing watching him take it all in and have FUN. He has been well behaved for the most part and has been a trooper while we have been traipsing around from place to place.

He enjoyed riding this little train and was so cute sitting there all big. I had been riding with him but when he saw the other kids riding by themselves, he said no mommy, my do it which was his way of saying not this time mommy, I can ride by myself!

We ate at Rainforest Cafe for dinner and while we were there they sang Happy Birthday to Mason and gave him a chocolate sundae. He had fun eating the whip cream with his fingers! I cannot believe my baby will be 2 on Saturday. :-(

The picture below is of him in one of the "cups" on the carousel. For some reason, he is afraid of the horses and will not ride on them.

Magic Kingdom - Take One

This morning we went to Magic Kingdom for a couple of hours. We rode Dumbo, The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Aladdin's Magic Carpet, the tea cups, It's a Small World and the Prince Charming's carousel. They were all lots of fun. Of course he wanted to ride each one of the rides a second time and would pitch a fit when we had to get off. We were definitely not alone in that category. All of the little ones wanted to keep riding. Below is a not so good picture of Dawn and Mason in front of the castle.

We ate lunch at Pinnochio's restaurant and then walked around for little while before taking the ferry boat back to our car. On our way back we were able to see part of the Main Street Parade. It was cool. Mason waved and smiled and laughed at all of the characters. It is just magical seeing the smiles on his face and the excitement in his eyes. We kept asking him if he was having fun and he kept saying "yes". Awesome morning for sure.

We are back at our suite letting Mason take a nap so we can spend the rest of the afternoon and evening enjoying the rest of Mickey Mouse's house. Hopefully it will be a little cooler than this morning.

Magic Kingdom Take 2 will be later this evening.

Until next time......

MIA and Vacation Ramblings

Sorry I have been MIA lately. Things have been crazy busy at work, we have had a crazy home schedule while Dawn has been taking care of her dad and we have been doing a little vacationing. With all of that going on, I haven't had time to sit down long enough to write anything meaningful. Not that I have many followers but I want it to be meaningful for me as well when I go back through these in the years to come. To help with my blogging slump that I have been in, I decided to download blogpress for my iPad so maybe I can get a few posts done between all of our adventures. Never used it before so we will see how it goes.

We are currently in Florida on our last vacation of the summer. Thanks to David and Trey for staying at our house and looking after things while we are traveling. Don't forget to water my flowers and to put out the recycling. Love you! We are staying at our timeshare in Orlando and are enjoying all of the amenities of timeshare traveling. Our pool is enormous and it has a splash pad that Mason has really enjoyed. He has been so funny to watch. He loves the water and the zero entry pool has allowed him much more freedom to move around helping him get much more comfortable each time he gets in it. The water temp is a bit warm for my liking but is great for the kiddos.

We spent all day yesterday with my brother who lives in Tampa. We don't get to see him very often so we were glad he came and hung out with us. We went over to the Gaylord Palms hotel that was behind our places to look around. It was nice but not as nice as the Gaylord Opryland place in Nashville we went to several years ago. A couple pics for your enjoyment.

Last night, he took us to Downtown Disney where we had so much fun. The place is huge so we were there exploring for several hours. There was so man things to see and do, we didn't know what to do first. Below are a few pictures that I took while we were there.

We ate at the T-Rex restaurant which was an amazing place. I took pictures there but those are on my camera and I cannot get to them until I can get back to my computer. The only pictures that I did get on my phone was of this wooly mammoth and the gigantic Coronita drink that Dawn ordered.

Today we went to Cocoa Beach. This was the first time that Mason has been to the beach this summer. He loved the waves and just laughed and laughed when they would come crashing in. He kept saying, he they comes. It was adorable. I got a few pictures with my phone but the best ones are you guessed it...on my camera.

Mason has been such a great little boy thus far on vacation. We are having so much fun and it makes my heart happy to see Mason enjoying himself and getting to do lots of fun new things. Tomorrow we are going to Magic Kingdom and I am so looking forward to the madness and all of the fun that we Re going to have. I cannot wait.

Until next time......
